Jimmy Dean - Big Bad John
Jimmy Dean - Big Bad John
BIG BAD JOHN is a country song originally performed by Jimmy Dean and composed by Dean and Roy Acuff. Released in September 1961, by the beginning of November it went to number one on the Billboard Hot 100 and won Dean the 1962 Grammy Award for Best Country & Western Recording. * The Jordainares sing backup on this song. * Floyd Cramer was to play piano backup but suggested that a hammer hitting steel would be better! Floyd has no ego problem. Everyone wanted this to be a big hit for Jimmy, one he badly needed. Big Bad John was also the title of a 1990 television movie starring Dean.カテゴリー :Music

MBilliaert - True or not, him being a murderer is part of the legend. Which, along with the moral of the act, is what this song is about. His legend.
Great song, though. If only more people were self-sacrificing.

L love this song...but I think you are all losing the full meaning of the word 'big'..the ref to his physical size is very evident...but the moral 'big' of self sacrifice is subtle ... but even bigger..TCN

regdar87 is right there are larger men in the current times. Which would be more dangerous a 6'6 350lb hamburger eatin fried chicken grease lickin no working tv remote pushing man or a 6'6 man of steel who works from daylight to dark. There is the true comparison.

to regdar...just a note...your right, there are much bigger guys NOW..but when this song was written and recorded, men did not spend the time in the gym bulking up, or use the steroids used today..so in THAT day, a guy this big was somebody to be respected....just a note...its a great song.. tribute to real heroes today.

The movie based on this song that was done in the late 80's or early 90's did not do it justice. Jimmy Dean was in it but it just wasn't a good movie.

We had a guy in the Fire Service we named "Big John" 6'-3" at 230 lbs. He was known for his ability to knock down doors so we could make entrance to extinguish the fire. He was timid and shy too.......but you never, ever got in his way.......Quite a guy "Big John" Still working too!! July 2008

Little history, Well my dad is in the lodge. I think I recall several years ago we were at a church function, and we were talking about country music. Well one of my dad's lodge brothers said Big John was his great, great, great Uncle. There is actually a sequel called The Cajun Queen. This is coming from a 20 yearold disc jockey.

If it's true that Jimmy was inspired - at least in part - by the popularity of the man then in the Oval Office, when he wrote this song, just be glad Nixon didn't win in 1960. Can you imagine what the title of this song might be?

You rock, pal. I was about your age when I first heard it, now I'm over 40 and this song still has the same effect.
