Mayo-san is from "Takarazuka Revue"(Takarazuka Kagekidan/Takarazuka Musical Company) which is Japanese unique theatrical company consist of all-female established in 1914.
This company is also a high school only for girls who are going to be on a stage. 
So Mayo-san also has a big talent of sing, ballet, Nitibu[mai-dancing], talk, perform, and act as well as seiyu(voice actor / 聲優).

Mayo-san has been a top of Moon Troupe (Tsuki-gumi) and played male character for twelve years there, so she has a deep voice like man(Kenshin Himura/Battousai).
Also she is famous as a part of Lady Oscar of the "La Rose de Versailles". 
She has done her best as an actress, of course now.
In 　Nov., 2008, she plays "Elizabeth"(エリザベート/シシィ役) at Teikoku-gekijo(帝国劇場/ていこくげきじょう) in Tokyo.

I think it's unique that Mayo-san who is from the 'Garden of Female' has taken the role of opposite gender male-Kenshin Himura.
Besides, When Rurouni Kenshin had been produced on CD voice drama in 1996, the role of Battousai was played by famous seiyu[voice actor/CV] Emi Ogata[female] -part of Kurama, the 'YU YU Hakusho'. 
Author N.Watsuki commented that he had wanted to ask Emi Ogata for the voice part of Kenshin Himura on TV program, the sponsor tenderd Mayo-san. 
Because Emi Ogata-san has been famous as a seiyu having cool voice of female(boy). While Mayo-san had not retired from her play of Takarazuka musical.
There is some nice episode.
When the casts of Samurai X were announced , most fan of RK noticed the hero's voice actor ,but fan of anime did not know the name Mayo Suzukaze. 
Then the first catchphrase which Battousai Himura had given by fan ― was ' Not only swordplay but also sing and dance '. 
Anyway other Jump heros - e.g.Son Goku and Son Gohan of 'Dragon Ball' are coverd by famous seiyu Mrs.Masako Nozawa.
